The impact of technology on communication
With all the technological advances over the years effective conversations have gone by the wayside. It seems most people feel it is more convenient to email or text message than it is to pick up the phone or meet with someone. The other way that seems to be used to communicate these days is social media which also takes effective conversations out of the equation. These are not as personal and not beneficial as the intended meaning might not be as easy to figure out as people think.
The important aspect of relearning effective conversation skills.
The important aspects of relearning how to have effective conversations are you can build a better relationship/rapport when you have a conversation with another party or group. Your voice, tone and personality come across the way you want it to and there are no misunderstandings. Having an effective conversation brings the human quality out and more complex ideas can be explained in one conversation rather than back and forth emails.
By having an effective conversation, you save time and there is no confusion in getting to the point as questions can be asked and answers can be provided in one call versus maybe 5 or 6 emails. Also, responses can be taken the right way and relationships can be built due to the proper tone and human touch that comes across.
Benefits for businesses and individuals
When you are going to reach out to someone, you really need to ask yourself would a conversation be better? Will it save me time as the other party would get a better understanding of what I want to share? Will my tone come across better on the phone rather than an email and will it be taken the right way? Effective conversations can accomplish this without leaving any unanswered questions like the above, as well as no confusion on either side. No one will be wondering “what did they mean by that?”
One other benefit is with a phone call or face to face meeting you know that you are being heard. With emails, with all the spam emails we receive daily, will our email be thought of as spam and not looked at.
